Answers to common questions about Clewed Up. App Store and desktop versions are coming soon; this page will cover them too.
Frequently asked questions
Does Clewed Up cost anything?
The web version is free to use, with no account or sign-up.
How do I install it on my phone or computer?
On iPhone or iPad, open the trainer in Safari, tap Share, then “Add to Home Screen”. On Android, open it in Chrome and choose “Install app” from the ⋮ menu. On Windows or Mac, open it in Chrome or Edge and click the install icon in the address bar.
Does it work without a signal?
Yes. Open the trainer once while online and it saves everything it needs. After that it works offline, including the lessons and illustrations. The knot demonstration videos need a connection because they play on YouTube.
Which courses does it cover?
Essential Navigation & Seamanship, Day Skipper theory, and Coastal Skipper / Yachtmaster Offshore theory: 212 questions and 41 illustrated lessons in total. There is also a mixed challenge drawing on all three.
Is it an official course?
No. Clewed Up is an independent study aid that follows the published course syllabi. It is not produced or endorsed by the Royal Yachting Association. Always check the current handbooks, the IRPCS text and your almanac.
I think an answer is wrong. What should I do?
Please tell us the level, topic and question wording so we can check it against the current references.
How do I get the latest version?
The trainer updates itself in the background. If something looks out of date, close it and open it again.
Can I use it with my students?
Yes. It was built with instructors in mind: each answer has an explanation and many include notes on common mistakes. Share the link or ask students to install it.
